Currently, Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery is not so widely used, but was hailed as the future new lithium battery by the scientists. It has several advantages.
1. Ultra long cycle life
The cycle life of lead-acid battery is about 300 times, 500 at most. While with standard charge (5 hour rate), the LiFePO4 battery could be up to 2000 times. The same quality lead-acid battery could use for 1- 1.5 years, while lithium iron phosphate could reach 7- 8 years under the same conditions. Taken together, the cost performance of LiFePO4 battery is 4 times to lead-acid battery.
2. Safe to use
lithium iron phosphate battery completely solve the security issues lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) and lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) hold. In strong collision, LiCoO2 and LiMn2O4 would explose and threaten the consumers’ security. While with strict safety test, even in the worst accident, LiFePO4 battery would not explode.
3. Can stand large current
Fast charge and discharge by 2C. With dedicated charger, the battery can be fully charged in 40 minutes by 1.5C, and the starting current can be up to 2C, while the lead-acid battery can not.
4. Resistance of high temperature
LiFePO4 battery can stand peak heat up to 350 ℃ -500 ℃, while LiCoO2 and LiMn2O4 battery could only suffer about 200 ℃.
5. Large capacity.
6. No memory effect.
7. Small size and light weight.
